About Art Nouveau Ljubljana: Prešeren Square to Miklošičeva

After the earthquake of 1895, Ljubljana rebuilt in the new style of the day. Start on Prešeren Square at the Art Nouveau palace of Galerija Emporium, home of the city’s first department store in 1903, then turn into Čopova for MUZA, the former City Savings Bank. Walk up Miklošičeva past the Grand Hotel Union to Ivan Vurnik’s painted Cooperative Bank of 1921, the finest example of the Slovenian national style, and on to Plečnik’s Triglav insurance palace of 1928–1930. Our advice: look up; the best details are above the shop fronts.

Why it's on our list

  • The 1903 Emporium palace on Prešeren Square
