Church of St Michael in the Marshes
A church on piles
About Church of St Michael in the Marshes
The Church of St Michael at Črna vas, built between 1937 and 1940 on the Ljubljana Marshes, is among Plečnik’s most original creations. It combines Greek temples with the churches of the Karst, whose belfries are part of the façade; because of the marshy ground it stands on piles and is partly built of wood, and a cleverly designed stair leads up to the door through the slim, open belfry. Our advice: cycle out across the Marshes and combine it with a visit to Plečnik House.
