About French Revolution Square & the Illyria monument
Trg francoske revolucije was laid out in 1793 and was first named after the crusading Knights of the Cross, who settled here in the 13th century and whose monastery became Križanke. In 1929 a monument to Napoleon’s Illyrian Provinces, designed by Plečnik with the sculptor Lojze Dolinar, was raised in the middle: a stone column with bronze reliefs of Napoleon and of Illyria, verses by the poets Valentin Vodnik and Oton Župančič, and the old Slovenian coat of arms. There is also a monument to the poet Simon Gregorčič. Our advice: the square is the gateway to Križanke, the City Museum and Vžigalica.
