The Cistercian abbey at Stična, south-east of Ljubljana, was founded in 1136 and became one of the great cultural and economic centres of the Slovenian lands, famous for the illuminated Stična Manuscripts. Monks still live here, and its buildings show every major European style from early Romanesque and Gothic to Renaissance and Baroque. The abbey houses the Slovene Museum of Christianity. Our advice: visit the herbal shop, linked to the abbey’s herbalist tradition.
