Turjak Castle, some 20 km south of Ljubljana, was first mentioned in 1220 and was the seat of the Auerspergs, the Counts of Turjak. It has the largest round bastion in Slovenia and a triangular Renaissance defensive corridor, among the earliest of its kind in Central Europe. In the 16th century it gave refuge to Protestant scholars working on the first translation of the Bible into Slovene, and France Prešeren made it famous in his ballad Turjaška Rozamunda. Our advice: check access before you go, as opening arrangements change.
