Ljubljanica Sluice Gate
Where the river leaves the city
About Ljubljanica Sluice Gate
Plečnik’s landscaped embankments along the Ljubljanica run all the way to the sluice gate by Cukrarna, where he imagined a triumphal arch marking the place the river leaves the city. His designs of the early 1930s were revised, and the barrier was built between 1939 and 1944, with its machinery cleverly hidden inside three towers. Our advice: the riverside walk from the Dragon Bridge to Cukrarna and the sluice is one of the city’s loveliest.
