Once the capital of Carniola

Kamnik, north of Ljubljana below the Kamnik Alps, had its heyday in the Middle Ages as the capital of Carniola. Its most remarkable sight is the Little Castle (Mali grad) on a rocky hill above the old town, first mentioned in 1202 and tied to the legend of the beautiful Veronika; its chapel is considered one of the earliest and most important Romanesque monuments in Slovenia and Europe. Zaprice Castle, a Renaissance mansion, houses the Kamnik Intermunicipal Museum, with a collection on the herdsmen of Velika Planina. Our advice: combine Kamnik with Velika Planina or the Volčji Potok Arboretum.
