Birch trees on a bridge

About Trnovo Bridge

Trnovo Bridge, built between 1929 and 1932, was the centrepiece of Plečnik’s new embankments for the Gradaščica. He designed it as an extension of the square in front of Trnovo Church: its pyramids echo the church’s spires, and it is decorated with massive balustrades, short columns and Nikolaj Pirnat’s stone statue of St John the Baptist, the church’s patron. Most remarkable of all, two rows of birch trees grow on the bridge itself. Our advice: start a walk through Trnovo and Krakovo here.
