Kovač means blacksmith, and this gostilna on Pot k Savi, near the Sava on the northern edge of Ljubljana, opened in the 19th century in a house with a smithy. It was a country inn when the city was much smaller, and it keeps that rural feel, with traditional Slovenian cooking that leans towards fish, home-made bread and a good list of Slovenian wines. It opens on weekdays only. Our advice: come by car or taxi, and ask about the fish of the day.
